Licensing

At The Inventions Factory, we often find that many new inventors believe the hard work is finished once a prototype has been developed and protected. In truth, this is where the real journey begins. Securing a licensing deal requires determination, persistence, and a clear strategy to put your invention in front of the right industry partners. Our role is to guide you through this next stage—helping you navigate the licensing process and maximize the commercial potential of your idea.

What is Licensing?

At The Inventions Factory, one of the most effective ways we help clients bring ideas to market is through licensing. Rather than taking on the cost and complexity of manufacturing and distribution yourself, licensing allows you to partner with an established company that already has the infrastructure, supply chains, and retail networks in place. By securing intellectual property protection first—through patents, design rights or trademarks—we make your idea more attractive to potential licensees and safeguard your ownership.

A licensing agreement is essentially a contract between you, the inventor, and a manufacturer or brand. In exchange for granting them the rights to produce and sell your product, you receive financial compensation—most often in the form of ongoing royalties based on sales. Licensing comes in different forms: exclusive deals with one partner, sole licenses where you retain some rights, and non-exclusive arrangements that allow multiple companies to commercialise your idea. Each option has pros and cons, depending on your goals and the market opportunity.

When negotiating a license, it’s important to consider the details. Agreements can cover how long the license lasts, whether it applies worldwide or only to certain regions, what the royalty rates will be, and how often you are paid. They can also address who pays for future patent renewals or trademarks, what happens with improvements to the invention, and what upfront payments may be offered. Getting these terms right is critical to ensuring you are fairly rewarded for your idea and that your rights remain protected.

At The Inventions Factory, we guide you through every stage of this process. From securing the right protections, designing professional visuals and functional prototypes, and preparing compelling pitch packs, through to connecting you with potential licensees and advising you on negotiations, our role is to maximise your chances of signing a strong licensing deal. With the right strategy, licensing can turn your idea into a commercial product while reducing risk and unlocking steady, long-term income.
